THE JOHVANNY PROJECT

Changing the Statistics

The Project

The project aims to help teenagers with autism spectrum disorders lead more independent lives. Using the input of our community, we are developing a curriculum that teaches high school students with autism how to become financially independent, handle their emotions, efficiently communicate, and advocate for themselves. The ultimate goal of the project is to increase the number of people with autism pursuing higher education and career paths and change the statistics.

The Statistics

According to the National Library of Medicine, youth with an Autism Spectrum disorder had the lowest rates of participation in employment and the highest rates of no participation compared with youth in other disability categories. More than 50% of youth who had left high school in the past two years had no participation in employment or education. Higher income and higher functional ability were also associated with higher adjusted odds of participation in postsecondary employment and education.
